Government challenged to remove the ceiling of schools to enable district service commission and city service commission to recruit teachers according to the number of learners in schools.
This concern was raised by Jonathan Ebwalu, the Member of Parliament for Soroti city west division saying that most of the schools in the city are struggling with few teachers and high enrollment of learners, something that has led to poor performance in schools.
Ebwalu notes with concern that a school like Arapai primary school has only 7 teachers on government pay roll instead of 15 as required compared to an enrollment of pupils which is more than 900 in a school
Ebwalu further urges that more teachers should be recruited in both primary and secondary schools in a bid to improve on the education departments in Teso.
However, Silver Emokor Ikokorese, the one in charge of teacher’s disputes and welfare in UNATU acknowledged that lack of adequate teachers in various schools has left most of the school lagging behind syllabus coverage.
